LIFE COACHING vs. THERAPY

Let me start off with saying from the outset that we are NOT therapists.  Therapists help you with past issues that you have not yet dealt with.  A Life Coach deals with the present and/or the future.

The analogy used on the Martha Beck Life Coach Training is that Therapists are like Doctors - you see them to “make you healthier”.  Should you approach me and I hear your “story”, I might decide that before I can help you, I need you to see a therapist. You may even need medication.  

Life Coaches can be compared to physical trainers - we help you reach your goals (future) and change behaviors (present)!

We do this by helping you look at “challenges” from  different perspectives and hold you accountable for setting and achieving your goals.   

Einstein said that “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”! 

Again … let me clarify!  We do not “fix” your problems for you!  We “guide” you and “suggest” alternatives for helping you CHANGE what you are currently doing.  It really is all about YOUR COMMITMENT to the process and and being willing and open-minded to do things differently.


the next question is …..  HOW?

I have been trained not only to use the traditional method of face-to-face sessions but can also provide coaching on the telephone, Skype and email.  So I suppose, it really does depend on what you would feel comfortable with, your time constraints, location, transport issues, etc.

In our first session, we meet to decide whether we can build a rapport (in other words - you like me and I like you), I decide whether I can actually help you (would hate to waste your time and money) and then we decide on an action plan.  If I can’t help you, I will refer you to “other specialists”.  If I can help you, I will provide you with a coaching contract in which you will agree to at least 6 weeks of coaching sessions with all the terms and conditions.

Each Life Coach will focus on different areas of expertise for example, we have coaches that specifically focus on “dealing with grief”, others that focus on “being an Adult Child”, some use Horse therapy to provide insight as to why you are where you are, some will help developing business plans or still others on marketing.

My area of expertise is Attention Deficit Disorder, Empty Nest Syndrome, Addiction and the changing of habits, and basically any major CHANGE that you might have experience that has got you in a total state of OVERWHELM!  And helping women set up business plans.
